Facts
More than 1.6 million square yards of sod was placed on the Polk
Parkway project between Interstate 4 and South Florida Avenue.
That’s enough sod to cover the field at Raymond James Stadium in
Tampa 180 times. The completed Parkway, from Interstate 4 to
Interstate 4, has enough sod to cover the Raymond James field
almost 750 times!
In excess of
2.3 million pounds of reinforcing steel was used in the
construction of the roadway and bridges just between Interstate
4 and South Florida Avenue. The completed Parkway has nearly 5.2
million pounds of reinforcing steel through it’s structure or
the equivalent weight of 26 cruise ships.
Approximately
33,500 linear feet of piling was used to build the Parkway
bridges between Interstate 4 and South Florida Avenue. The
completed 51 bridges of the Parkway were built with 77,279
linear feet of piling. If driven into the ground end to end, the
piling would reach 14 and half miles deep.
There was
635,674 linear feet of wire used on the western leg of the Polk
Parkway. That’s enough to stretch from Lakeland to Gainesville.
To Complete the Parkway, -approximately 1.25 million linear
feet of wire was used---enough to stretch from Lakeland to
Homestead.
Close to 4.8
million cubic yards of soil were used in construction of the
western leg of the Polk Parkway. More than 11.8 million cubic
yards were used on the entire Parkway. That is enough soil to
fill Raymond James Stadium in Tampa 37 times!
Almost half a
million square feet of bridge panel walls have been used to
construct the entire Parkway. A one-foot high wall built with
these panels would be 90 miles long.
More than
27,500 reflective pavement markers were installed to help
direct traffic safely on the Polk Parkway.
Nineteen miles
of drainage pipe was installed on the western leg of the Polk
Parkway. The completed Parkway has approximately 35 miles of
drainage pipe installed.
Landscape crews planted 71,859 plants along the Polk Parkway
route.

Caption: The Polk Parkway loops 25 miles around the eastern side of Lakeland and connects with Interstate 4 north of Auburndale. Most of the Polk Parkway traverses rural cattle ranches, citrus groves and undisturbed wetlands, such as this section near Saddle Creek, headwaters of the Charlotte Harbor Estuary.
