How to Get Better Gas Mileage
It's important to get the best gas mileage for the money you spend. The following are tips from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Government to help reduce the amount of gas you use and increase your overall mileage.*
- Avoid aggressive driving – Rapid acceleration and frequent braking can reduce your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds. You could save up to 96 cents per gallon by just driving sensibly.
- Observe the speed limit – For optimal fuel economy and safety, drive at the posted speed limit. Gas mileage decreases when you drive faster than 60 miles per hour. Every 5 miles per hour over 60 is equivalent to paying an additional 20 cents per gallon for gas.
- Remove extra weight – Take out those golf clubs or other heavy items when you're driving around town. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle reduces your miles per gallon by up to 2 percent or 6 cents per gallon (this impacts smaller vehicles more than larger ones). If you must carry items, put them in the trunk rather than a roof rack to minimize drag.
- Take advantage of cruise control – Maintain a constant speed by using cruise control on the highway.
- Keep your engine tuned – Maintain your car properly by tuning up your engine. Replace air filters regularly, keep tires inflated and aligned and use your car manufacturer's suggested grade of oil. Fixing serious maintenance problems can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent.
*Figures based on a fuel price of $2.91 per gallon.
