Current construction projects
In an effort to provide our customers with
the most current construction updates
along Florida's Turnpike, the projects listed
below are underway as Florida's Turnpike
Enterprise continues to modernize
and widen the roadways, improve
and update interchanges and
continue construction on
SunPass-only express lanes.
Northwest 74th Street Interchange and Okeechobee Toll Plaza Conversion Miami-Dade County (Milepost 32) Construction began earlier this year to build a new SunPass-only interchange along Florida's Turnpike at Northwest 74th Street. In conjunction, the Okeechobee mainline toll plaza is being converted into an open road tolling plaza so SunPass customers can pay their toll while traveling at regular highway speeds. No gates, no tollbooths and no need to slow down. This $63.4 million project is scheduled for completion in late 2009. Widening in Broward County (Milepost 55-66) A large scale widening project is underway on Florida's Turnpike through Broward County. This multi-phase, multi-million-dollar project is expected to take several more years to complete but will alleviate traffic in this highly traveled area. Sawgrass Expressway Widening Broward County (Atlantic Boulevard to Coral Ridge Road) To alleviate congestion on this important commuter highway, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has begun construction of two additional lanes within the existing median to widen the highway from four to six lanes. Additionally, this project will include the installation of sound barrier walls, median guardrails and the Intelligent Transportation System technology to monitor traffic conditions and provide real-time traveler information. This $57 million widening project is scheduled for completion in early 2008. Delray Beach to Lantana Toll Plaza (Milepost 80-89) and Atlantic Avenue Interchange Palm Beach County (Milepost 81) A new interchange on Florida's Turnpike has been partially opened to traffic at Atlantic Avenue in Palm Beach County. Additionally, a new toll plaza to the west of the Turnpike has been recently built and opened to accommodate southbound traffic. The toll booth to the east of the Turnpike will accommodate northbound traffic and is scheduled for completion by fall 2007. This northbound plaza will include an additional SunPass only lane. The widening of the Turnpike in this area also has begun and will be completed during the last phases of this $28.4 million project in 2008.
Mainline Turnpike WideningOrange County (Mileposts 259-265) This $128.6 million project will add two lanes in each direction between Interstate 4 and the State Road 408 Interchanges. This project includes widening the existing bridges over Interstate 4 and Apopka-Vineland Road, along with replacing the Kirkman Road and Gotha Road bridges over the Turnpike. Improvements will also be made at the Interstate 4, and SR 408 interchanges. Construction is scheduled for completion in August of 2010. Beachline West Toll Plaza Reconstruction Orange County (Beachline Mileposts 4-6) Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has begun to reconstruct the Bee Line West Mainline Toll Plaza near Milepost 6 along State Road 528, which is part of a series of enhancements that will take place within the next two years. The current project consists of the demolition and reconstruction of the existing mainline plaza to improve traffic flow with additional lanes. This new plaza will feature two SunPass-only express lanes in each direction, with the capacity to add an additional lane when the Beachline is widened to three lanes in each direction. Once complete, SunPass customers will be able to travel at highway speeds in the express lanes. This $10.3 million project is scheduled for completion in spring of 2009.
