Open road tolling coming soon to a plaza near you

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise will soon bring open road tolling (ORT) to four Turnpike toll plazas in South Florida, which will result in improved customer service and traffic flow for motorists with SunPass. Open road tolling entails the removal of tollbooths, gates and concrete barriers from the SunPass-only lanes and the installation of the SunPass toll collection equipment overhead. Motorists with SunPass will pay the toll while traveling at highway speeds of 55 mph instead of the current designated speed limit of 25 mph. Existing cash and mixed-use lanes will remain the same.

Work began in August at the Lantana toll plaza (Milepost 88) in Palm Beach County, and started in September at the Cypress Creek toll plaza (Milepost 63) in Broward County and at the Bird Road (Milepost 22) and Homestead (Milepost 10) toll plazas in Miami-Dade County. Construction is being fast-tracked, with the goal of having the conversion projects completed by the end of 2008.

The completion of these ORT projects is a high priority for Florida's Turnpike Enterprise due to the continuous increase of SunPass usage on the Turnpike. SunPass volumes are approaching capacity at many of the mainline toll plazas, and this innovative concept is expected to reduce congestion at all four toll plazas. When the projects are completed, each SunPass ORT lane will accommodate an additional 800-plus vehicles per hour.

The most critical and time-sensitive construction activity is the removal of the concrete islandsÑthe barriers, gates and columns. Once these are removed, the new toll equipment structures and associated toll equipment must be functional in order to operate the lanes. Island removal will be done during weekends and will require the closure of several toll lanes at the plazas. At the Bird Road toll plazas, this activity will take seven consecutive days.

In addition to the work at Lantana, Cypress Creek, Bird Road and Homestead, ORT construction projects are also underway at various ramp plazas and the Sunrise and Deerfield plazas on the Sawgrass Expressway, as well as at Okeechobee toll plaza in Miami-Dade.
