When you see an emergency vehicle such as a police car, State Farm Safety Patrol Vehicle, ambulance or fire engine stopped on the side of the road with lights flashing, what do you do? A. Speed up to pass B. Stop your car suddenly C. Vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle and/or slow down cautiously In July 2002, the Move Over Act was instituted in Florida to protect law enforcement officers and emergency workers from being injured during traffic stops or emergencies along the roadway. With the Move Over Act, you are required to approach emergency vehicles cautiously. If you can't change lanes safely, or if you are on a two-lane highway, you must slow down while maintaining a safe speed so as not to impede other traffic. Unless otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, you must slow down by 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour or greater. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, you should travel at five miles per hour. Please be sure to observe this law for your safety as well as other motorists.
