This $128.6 million project will add two lanes in each direction between Interstate 4 (I-4) and the State Road (SR)408 Interchanges. This project includes widening the existing bridges over I-4 and Apopka-Vineland Road, along with replacing the Kirkman Road and Gotha Road bridges over the Turnpike. Mainline Turnpike Widening - Mileposts 265-270
This $68.8 million project adds two lanes in each direction between the SR 408 Interchange and Beulah Road. Construction includes replacing the ramp bridge at the Ocoee Exit 267B and the Turnpike bridge over Beulah Road. Additionally, improvements will be made at the SR 429 Interchange. Auxiliary lanes will be maintained between SR 408 and SR 429, with the final roadway section becoming 10 lanes. This project is scheduled for completion in August 2010.

Beachline West Toll Plaza Reconstruction - Beachline Mileposts 4-6
Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has begun to reconstruct the Bee Line West Mainline Toll Plaza near Milepost 6 along SR 528, which is part of a series of enhancements that will begin within the next two years. The current project consists of the demolition and reconstruction of the existing mainline plaza to improve traffic flow with additional lanes. This new plaza will feature two SunPass-only express lanes in each direction, with the capacity to add an additional lane when the Beachline is widened to three lanes in each direction. Once complete, SunPass customers will be able to travel at highway speeds in the express lanes. This $10.3 million project is scheduled for completion in spring 2009.

Delray Beach to Lantana Toll Plaza - Milepost 80-89 and Atlantic Avenue Interchange - Milepost 81
The Lantana Toll Plaza has completed the conversion to open road tolling which allows motorists with SunPass to pay their toll while driving at highway speeds. A new interchange on Florida's Turnpike has been partially opened to traffic at Atlantic Avenue in Palm Beach County. Half of the new overpass bridge has been built and is being used to accommodate northbound traffic. The eastern half of the old bridge has been demolished allowing the construction of the new bridge to continue. The reconfiguration of the Atlantic Avenue Interchange is part of a $30 million widening project in Delray Beach. Construction is scheduled for completion in early 2009.

Sawgrass Expressway Widening - Atlantic Boulevard to Coral Ridge Drive

Early 2008, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise completed this $57 million project, which widened the expressway from four to six lanes by adding two lanes within the existing median. This project also included the installation of sound barrier walls, median guardrails and Intelligent Transportation Systems technology to monitor traffic conditions and provide real-time traveler information.

Sawgrass Expressway Toll Plaza Conversions

Open road tolling recently became available at the Sawgrass Expressway's Sunrise Toll Plaza and at four interchanges, including those at Commercial Boulevard, Atlantic Boulevard, Sample Road and University Drive. Construction continues at the Deerfield Toll Plaza on the Sawgrass Expressway, which will be converted into an open road tolling plaza where motorists with SunPass can pay the toll while traveling at highway speeds. The work entails constructing SunPass-only gantries west of the existing plaza and removing the center tollbooths from the existing toll plaza. Construction is scheduled for completion in spring 2010.

Sawgrass Expressway "Smart Highways" Project

Motorists approaching the Sawgrass Expressway from nine local cross streets will soon have access to information about traffic conditions before they enter the expressway. Construction began last fall to install electronic signs on all the interchanges, from Sunrise Boulevard to Lyons Road, along with the addition of one electronic sign on the Sawgrass Expressway to supplement those already in place. Construction is scheduled for completion in summer 2008.

Widening in Broward County - Milepost 50-66

A large-scale widening project is underway on Florida's Turnpike through Broward County. This multi-phase, multi-million-dollar project is expected to take several additional years to complete but will help improve traffic conditions in this highly traveled area.  An additional phase of the widening program will begin in fall 2008.
