Drainage improvements within the interchange will enhance flood protection along Atlantic Boulevard and the Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) ramps. Atlantic Boulevard will be raised 2.3 ft and the Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) bridge will be reconstructed to provide adequate vertical clearance.  Other drainage improvements include construction of a bulkhead wall, also known as a retaining wall, around Pond 9-1 to prevent the water from seeping into the Sawgrass Expressway or SR 869’s drainage system.

The Sawgrass Expressway or SR 869 will be widened to accommodate 10 lanes but only 6 lanes will be striped for use until the adjacent segments of the Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869 are constructed. The southbound on ramp and the northbound off ramp will be widened from one to two lanes.

Left and right turn lanes will be added at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Lakeview Drive and bike lanes along Atlantic Boulevard in both directions from west of the Atlantic Boulevard Interchange to Lakeview Drive and to NW 122nd St in the eastbound direction. Traffic signal improvements are proposed at the Atlantic Boulevard intersections with the Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) and with Lakeview Drive.

The existing noise walls will remain in place. If required, noise walls will be constructed with adjacent widening projects.

The existing 6-lane Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869 will be widened to 10-lanes and the existing grass median will be converted to a paved median with a concrete median barrier wall. As previously mentioned, the two (2) inside lanes in either direction, will be opened to traffic after construction of the adjacent widening projects.

The preferred build alternative was evaluated to analyze potential effects to the social, cultural, natural, and physical environment in accordance with state and federal regulations. The evaluation matrix shown here summarizes the evaluation results.

The proposed roadway typical section along Atlantic Boulevard beneath the Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869 accommodates three (3) lanes in each direction and includes provisions for 7-ft bicycle lanes on either side of the road and a 6-ft sidewalk along the north side of Atlantic Boulevard.

The proposed roadway typical section along Atlantic Boulevard from the Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869 to Lakeview Drive accommodates three lanes in each direction and has provisions for 5 to 7-ft bicycle lanes on either side of the road and a 6-ft sidewalk along the north side of Atlantic Boulevard.

A Noise Wall evaluation for this project has been performed. Existing noise walls will remain in place. If required, noise walls will be constructed with adjacent widening projects.

Three (3) parcel acquisitions are needed to construct the proposed improvements along Atlantic Boulevard. One (1) of these parcels is required to construct the westbound Atlantic Boulevard auxiliary lanes that will be used to access the on-ramp to northbound Sawgrass Expressway. Two (2) other parcels are needed for the construction of the eastbound Atlantic Boulevard right turn lane to Lakeview Dr.  One (1) parcel has been donated to the Florida’s Turnpike.

Travel lanes will remain open during peak periods. Temporary detours will be limited to construction along the four (4) existing ramps and for the placement of overhead sign structures. These detours will only occur Sunday through Thursday between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., as needed.

The temporary detour between West Sample Road and Atlantic Boulevard will be used by southbound travelers during construction of the Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869 southbound off ramp and installation of overhead signs and demolition of existing overhead signs on the Sawgrass Expressway, or SR 869.
