FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise announces lane closures and work zone information for construction and maintenance projects in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties, for the week beginning Sunday, March 1. Motorists should drive with caution through the work zones and adhere to posted detour signs and speed limits. Please pay special attention to the closures noted in red.

 

Tandem truckers should also pay special attention to the closures noted in red which include full road and ramp closures and closures of special significance.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 821 is being widened from four to six lanes from Campbell Drive/SW 312 Street to Tallahassee Road/SW 137 Avenue in Miami-Dade County. This project includes reconstructing the Turnpike bridges within the corridor, improving the interchanges at Biscayne Drive and Tallahassee Road and constructing a new northbound entrance ramp from Tallahassee Road. Construction is scheduled to continue through mid-2028. Approximate cost: $99 million.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 821 is being improved between Hainlin Mill Road/SW 216 Street and Caribbean Boulevard/SW 200 Street in Miami-Dade County. Work includes widening Hainlin Mill Road, Cutler Ridge Boulevard/SW 211 Street, the northbound Turnpike bridge over Caribbean Boulevard, westbound Eureka Drive underneath the Turnpike and southbound Frontage Road. Additional improvements include bridge repairs, noise walls along qualifying residential areas, upgrading signalization, pedestrian features, and lighting. Construction is scheduled to continue through mid-2027. Approximate cost: $37 million.

Eastbound and westbound Okeechobee Road/U.S. 27 between NW 138 Street and NW 118 Avenue

Overnight single and double lane closures, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday, March 1, and nightly through Thursday, March 5.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 821 is being widened to 10 lanes between NW 106 Street and I-75. The project entails constructing a new eastbound Okeechobee Road to southbound Florida’s Turnpike entrance ramp and a new northbound Florida’s Turnpike exit ramp to eastbound Okeechobee Road, as well as an additional lane in each direction on Okeechobee Road between west of the Turnpike and NW 107 Avenue. Work also consists of constructing a new diverging diamond interchange at Florida’s Turnpike and NW 170 Street. Resurfacing, guardrail and fencing, lane striping, stormwater drainage, signage and lighting improvements will also be installed as part of this project. Construction will continue through mid-2026. Approximate cost: $370 million.

Northbound and southbound Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 between Turnpike Extension/S.R. 821 and Griffin Road/S.R. 818 (Milepost 47 to Milepost 54)

Overnight single lane closures, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday, March 1, and nightly through Thursday, March 5. A second lane may close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 5 a.m.

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Auxiliary Lanes are being added to Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 from the Turnpike Extension/S.R. 821 to Griffin Road/S.R. 818. This project will increase roadway capacity, reduce congestion and improve travel times. The project also includes safety improvements at Hollywood Boulevard/S.R. 820 and SW 63 Terrace by closing the median to reduce vehicle conflict points and accidents, and at Hollywood Boulevard and S. 62 Avenue by eliminating the eastbound and westbound turn lanes. Construction will continue through mid-2029. Approximate cost: $230 million.


FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE/S.R. 91 TSM&O PROJECT FROM SOUTH OF

SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY/S.R. 869 TO NORTH OF GLADES ROAD/S.R. 808

 

Northbound and southbound Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 between Milepost 71 and Milepost 77 Overnight single and double lane closures, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday, March 1, and nightly through Thursday, March 5.

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 is undergoing significant enhancements between south of Sawgrass Expressway/S.R. 869 (milepost 71) and north of Glades Road/S.R. 808 (milepost 76) in Broward and Palm Beach counties. As part of these improvements, a new lane is being added in each direction within the project limits to increase capacity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety. This project also includes installing new roadway lighting, signage, fresh pavement markings, and upgrading the intelligent transportation system to promote safer and more efficient travel. Noise walls will be constructed along qualifying residential areas. Construction will continue through 2029. Approximate cost: $100 million.

 

SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY/S.R. 869 WIDENING

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The canal is being improved along Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 from north of the L-38 Canal (milepost 79) to north of Atlantic Avenue/S.R. 806 (milepost 82) in Palm Beach County. Construction is scheduled to continue through early 2026. Approximate cost: $30.8 million.

 

FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE/S.R. 91 AND BOYNTON BEACH BOULEVARD/S.R. 804 INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT

·       Northbound Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 traffic wishing to access Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 804 (Exit 86) will be directed to exit at Atlantic Avenue/S.R. 806 (Exit 81), travel west on Atlantic Avenue to U.S. 441/S.R. 7, and travel north on U.S. 441 to access Boynton Beach Boulevard.


PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 and Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 804 (Exit 86) interchange is undergoing significant enhancements to improve traffic flow and safety. This project includes a new westbound turn lane from Boynton Beach Boulevard to northbound Florida’s Turnpike and an additional lane from the northbound Florida’s Turnpike exit ramp to Boynton Beach Boulevard. Safety upgrades feature the installation of new highly reflective overhead signage and pavement markings, designed for optimal visibility in all lighting and weather conditions. Construction is scheduled to continue through early 2026. Approximate cost: $9.5 million.

 

FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE/S.R. 91 WIDENING PROJECT FROM NORTH OF BOYNTON BEACH BOULEVARD/S.R. 804 TO NORTH OF LAKE WORTH ROAD/S.R. 802

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 is being widened to four lanes in each direction, from north of Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 804 to north of Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 804. This project also includes reconstructing the Hypoluxo Road bridge over Southern Turnpike Mainline to allow for the new road configuration. Additionally, sound barrier walls will be constructed along qualifying residential areas. Bridge widening, road milling and resurfacing, signage and signal improvements are planned. Construction will continue through early 2026. Approximate cost: $170 million.

 

WEST PALM BEACH SERVICE PLAZA PARKING IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The truck parking facility at the West Palm Beach Service Plaza is being improved. Truck parking will be consolidated in the northern section of the service plaza to enhance traffic flow and increase the number of availabl e truck spaces. Construction will continue through late 2026. Approximate cost: $32.4 million.

This project includes reconstructing the Turnpike interchanges at Okeechobee Boulevard and Jog Road, including the addition of a new northbound Turnpike entrance ramp from Jog Road and a southbound Turnpike exit ramp to Jog Road. Additionally, this project includes reconstructing the bridges at Okeechobee Boulevard and Jog Road to increase longevity and reinforce durability. Sound barrier walls will be constructed along qualifying residential areas. Safety upgrades feature the installat ion of new roadway lighting, updated signage, fresh pavement markings, and guardrail to promote safer and more efficient travel. Construction will continue through 2030. Approximate cost: $236 million.

SOUTH FLORIDA WRONG-WAY VEHICLE DETECTION TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection Technology is being implemented at additional locations on Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 821, from Allapattah Road/SW 112 Avenue to Tamiami Trail/U.S. 41/SW 8 Street in Miami-Dade County. The project aims to improve safety by providing wrong way driving detection systems along with new highly reflective signage and pavement markings, which will increase visibility in all lighting and weather conditions. These enhancements will assist in monitoring, detecting, and preventing wrong-way drivers, and notifying law enforcement and Traffic Management Center staff for response. Construction is scheduled to continue through late 2026. Approximate cost: $3.3 million.

 

TURNPIKE EXTENSION/S.R. 821 LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The roadway lighting along Florida’s Turnpike/S.R. 91 is being upgraded to LED from north of Griffin Road/S.R. 818 (milepost 54) to south of Sample Road/S.R. 834 (milepost 68) and from Atlantic Avenue/S.R. 806 (milepost 81) to south of Boynton Beach Boulevard/S.R. 806 (milepost 86) in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Construction is scheduled to continue through early 2027. Approximate cost: $5.4 million.
