Introduction
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is developing improvements for the existing interchange at US 1 and Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade County.
- Design is the third phase of the FDOT project development process. Construction plans, specifications, and final estimates to build the project are developed during the design phase.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (the Enterprise) has identified a segment of Florida’s Turnpike/State Road (SR) 821 in need of operational improvements. This portion of Florida’s Turnpike serves as a key gateway to South Florida, connecting regional traffic with residential communities, commercial hubs, and freight routes.
The proposed improvements include:
- Widening the SR 821 southbound exit ramp and existing bridge at US 1 from one to two lanes
- Widening the SR 821 southbound exit ramp at Davis Parkway from one to two lanes
- Constructing a new bypass lane from southbound US 1 for vehicles wishing to travel westbound on Palm Drive
- Adding turn lanes at the intersection of US 1 and Palm Drive
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) improvements from the US 1 Interchange to the Campbell Drive Interchange
- Constructing a new Shared Use Path on US 1 southbound
Project Area
ENVIRONMENT
This project has undergone environmental review as part of Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise’s standard project development process. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise follows a comprehensive approach to environmental analysis for all projects. This includes evaluating potential impacts on natural resources, protected species, wetlands, and cultural resources, as well as assessing noise, air quality, and social effects. The agency coordinates with relevant environmental agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
SCHEDULE
The project is currently in the Design Phase, which includes finalizing plans, environmental review coordination, utility clearance, and permitting. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2028, pending the completion of design and pre-construction activities.
