Transportation System Management And Operations (TSM&O) Improvements To State Road 50 In Ocoee

FPID: 452082-1

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is designing Transportation System Management and Operations (TSM&O) improvements for State Road (SR) 50 in Ocoee.

This project is in Design, which is the third phase of the FDOT project development process. During this phase, construction plans, specifications, and final estimates to build a project are developed.

The TSM&O improvements are proposed with the goals of:

  • The addition of a right lane on the outside of SR 50 eastbound to accommodate right in/right out access at Marshall Farms Road and the Florida’s Turnpike exit ramp merge.
  • The addition of a wall to retain the embankment under the existing bridge to accommodate the additional lane.
  • Revisions to Florida’s Turnpike entrance and exit ramps to SR 50 eastbound as required to accommodate the additional lane on SR 50.
  • A new actuated signal at Florida’s Turnpike exit ramp terminal at SR 50 eastbound.
  • Milling and resurfacing of the existing lanes of SR 50 eastbound extending for the limits impacted by the improvements.
  • Replacement of impacted light poles and the addition of new poles as needed to meet criteria.

Project Background

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise concurred with the recommendations of the Widen Florida’s Turnpike from south of SR 408 to SR 50 PD&E Study. The recommendations included TSM&O improvements at State Road 50 in Ocoee.

Project Area

As part of the Widen Turnpike PD&E Study from south of SR 408 to SR 50, potential impacts to the environment were considered and measures to minimize and mitigate for these impacts were incorporated into the project. Based on the recommended design, it was determined that there are no significant impacts associated with the TSM&O improvements. As the project continues through design, any new impacts associated with the project will be identified and addressed through the permitting process with the appropriate resource agency.

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is at the forefront of planning for a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced transportation system for the future. The Enterprise continually seeks opportunities to integrate emerging transportation technologies that can help reduce congestion, create mobility choices, minimize environmental impacts and improve safety. The Enterprise also recognizes that connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies hold unprecedented opportunities for enhancing mobility and increasing safety on our roadways.
