PROPOSED STIRLING ROAD (SR 848) AND FLORIDA’S TURNPIKE (SR 91) INTERCHANGE (MP 52)

BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA

FPID: 417218-2

Introduction

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is conducting a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to examine the feasibility of a new interchange at Florida’s Turnpike (State Road 91) and Stirling Road (SR 848) in Broward County.

Project Development Process

The PD&E Study is the second phase of the FDOT project development process. Each PD&E Study requires the combined efforts of professional engineers, planners and scientists, who collect and analyze project-related information to determine social, economic, physical and environmental impacts. Afterward, they develop the best solution for a community’s transportation needs.

Noise Studies are performed in the PD&E phase and the Design phase, and re-evaluated if there is a major change in design to the roadway.

Project Background

A 2008 PD&E Study examined an interchange at Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) and Stirling Road (SR 848) which resulted in a No-Build Alternative based on the cost/benefit analysis and other factors. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has since expressed a desire to re-examine the feasibility of adding an interchange at Stirling Road and Florida’s Turnpike due to the current and anticipated growth of the area and future economic development plans in Broward County.

This PD&E Study will evaluate the Stirling Road and Florida’s Turnpike interchange and explore intersection improvements at SR 7/US 441 and Stirling Road.

The purpose of this study is to:

  • Relieve congestion from the nearby Hollywood Boulevard and Griffin Road interchanges along Florida’s Turnpike, respectively located south and north of Stirling Road.
  • Provide improved access and system linkage for local and regional travel to and from Florida’s Turnpike and Stirling Road.
  • Improve mobility options for residents and businesses to keep pace with population growth, economic development, and traffic demand.
  • Enhance a key emergency evacuation route.

The proposed corridor improvements will provide additional benefits such as:

  • Increasing capacity
  • Meeting existing and future travel demands
  • Improving access and connectivity between Florida’s Turnpike, Stirling Road, and other communities
  • Offering opportunities to improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities
  • Enhancing roadside safety features

Study Area

The study area includes:

  • Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) south of Sheridan Street (MP 51) to south of Griffin Road (MP 53)
  • Stirling Road west of SW 58th Avenue and east of SW 40th
  • The Seminole Tribe of Florida Reservation area.
  • Intersection improvements at Stirling Road and SR7/US 441.

The total project length is approximately 3 miles.

Study Area Broward

Environment

This PD&E study will examine existing conditions across the social, cultural, natural and physical environments so that we can analyze the potential impacts of various improvement alternatives.

Currently, Florida’s Turnpike at Stirling Road is six lanes (three in each direction). However, construction is starting in late 2024 to widen Florida’s Turnpike from 6 lanes to 8 lanes from SR 821 (Milepost 47) to south of Griffin Road (Milepost 54).
