The Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise welcomes you to the Public Information Meeting for Phase 3 of the Suncoast Parkway 2 (SR 589) project from CR 486 to US 19, financial project identification number 442764-2 and 3.

The Suncoast Parkway 2 (SR 589) project is divided into three (3) phases.

Phase 1 has completed construction and opened in February 2022. This phase begins at US 98 and ends at SR 44 in Lecanto. It is 13 miles long and included fully directional interchanges at US 98 and West Cardinal Street, as well as a partial interchange at SR 44 with movements to and from the south only.

Phase 2 will extend Suncoast Parkway northward from SR 44 to CR 486, West Norvell Bryant Highway. It is approximately three miles long and includes the completion of the diamond interchange at SR 44, as well as a partial interchange at CR 486. Phase 2 is currently scheduled to begin construction mid-2023.

Phase 3 of Suncoast Parkway 2 (SR 589), the topic of tonight’s presentation, has been divided into two (2) segments. Segment 3A will extend SR 589 from CR 486 to CR 495, approximately five miles. This segment is undergoing final design and is scheduled to begin construction in 2025. Segment 3B will be the final extension of SR 589 from CR 495 to US 19 at Red Level and is also scheduled to begin construction in late 2025. The design team is currently reviewing preliminary alignment and interchange alternatives for this segment. The project also includes a multi-use recreational trail along the west side of the roadway that will be an extension of the existing multi-use trail along Phase 2 of Suncoast Parkway 2.

Phase 3 will begin south of CR 486 at the Phase 2 end project limit. SR 589 will bridge over the realigned Knoll Road which is being constructed as part of Phase 2. The second bridge crossing is at CR 486 where the full interchange will be completed by this project. SR 589 continues northward along the Duke Energy Right of Way before bridging over North Reynolds Avenue.

SR 589 continues northward veering away from the Duke Energy Right of Way before bridging over West Gum Street. The 1998 approved State Environmental Impact Report concept included West Gum Street bridging over SR 589. This crossing has been revised to bridge SR 589 over this local road to maintain connectivity.

CR 495 (North Citrus Avenue) will be realigned, and a new trail head and partial interchange will be constructed. The construction of the proposed interchange for SR 589 at CR 495 will be broken up between Segment 3A and Segment 3B. Segment 3B will extend SR 589 over CR 495 and complete the diamond interchange before continuing north within the Duke Energy right of way. SR 589 will bridge over West Emerald Oaks Drive.

Segment 3B will extend SR 589 over the CSX / Florida Northern Railroad, West Dunnellon Road (CR 488), and North Bitterroot Drive.

The existing CR 488 will be realigned to the south to maintain access spacing, and a trailhead will be constructed at the existing intersection with North Suncoast Boulevard (US 19). An Intersection Control Evaluation for realigned County Road 488 at US 19 is currently underway.

The northern terminus of SR 589 at US 19 in Red Level proposes a full interchange to provide free flow traffic movements in all directions.

The ten-mile extension of Suncoast Parkway 2 from County Road 486 to US 19 results in access modifications for many local roads along the corridor.

This board illustrates two alternatives for local road connectivity at North Reynolds Avenue and West Skink Lane. In Alternative-1, local road connection is not constructed as part of this project, parcels which currently utilize North Tree Frog Point and North Iguana Path may need to determine alternative means of access.
