The PD&E Study limits extend along the Sawgrass Expressway and SW 10th Street from west of US 441 to Powerline Road, a distance of 4 miles. The study also includes 2.7 miles of the Florida’s Turnpike from Wiles Road to the Broward/Palm Beach County Line. The project is located within Broward County. There are three existing interchanges within the project limits.

The project purpose and need are to improve regional connectivity, accommodate year 2045 travel demand, enhance safety, improve travel time reliability, and enhance emergency response and evacuation.

The project includes operational and safety enhancements at the US 441 (SR 7), Lyons Road and Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) interchanges.

Improvements to the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike are needed to accommodate year 2045 travel demands. Travel demands on the transportation network will increase as the population grows. When Build Alternatives 1, 2 and the No‐Build Alternative are compared to each other, both build alternatives show significant traffic benefits over the No‐Build Alternative. The build alternatives reduce signal delays and network travel times, which in turn, reduces congestion and the potential for crashes.

Improvements to the study area are needed to enhance safety. Between the years 2017 and 2021, there were almost 1,900 crashes within the study limits resulting in 555 injuries and 13 fatalities. These crashes equate to an economic cost of 276 million dollars. If nothing is done, increased congestion will lead to an increase in crashes.

The conceptual plans show the conceptual design and roadway cross sections along the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike, for Alternatives 1 and 2.

An evaluation matrix compares Alternative 1, Alternative 2 and the No-Build Alternative.

FDOT has other projects underway along the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike corridors. The PD&E Study team is currently coordinating the proposed improvements with these adjacent projects within Broward County.

After the Alternatives Public Information Meeting is held, we will review all public comments in conjunction with the social, cultural, environmental, and engineering factors to reach a recommendation on a preferred alternative. The preferred alternative will then be presented at a Public Hearing for public input in the 3rd quarter of 2023, before the study concludes in early 2024. Please note that this schedule is subject to change.

Currently, FDOT District Four is moving forward with the SW 10th Street Connector Lanes Project. The limits of the FDOT District Four project overlap with the limits of this PD&E Study between Florida’s Turnpike and Powerline Road. The SW 10th Street Connector Lanes Project will end immediately west of the Florida’s Turnpike.
