INTRODUCTION

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is widening Florida’s Turnpike in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Project Details

Design is the third phase of the FDOT project development process. Construction plans, specifications, and final estimates to build the project are developed during the design phase.

The project widens Florida’s Turnpike Mainline/SR 91 from north of Glades Road (Milepost 76.8) to north of the L-38 Canal (Milepost 80.2) in Palm Beach County. In addition, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has partnered with Palm Beach County Engineering and Public Works to widen Yamato Road from west of Lakeridge Boulevard to west of Florida’s Turnpike from four to six lanes.

Diagram outlining the project development process in five phases: Planning, PD&E Study, Design, Right of Way Acquisition, and Construction.

The improvements are proposed with the goals of:

  • Increasing number of general use lanes from six to eight and adding one auxiliary lane in each direction of Florida’s Turnpike
  • Realigning southbound off ramp to the existing Glades Road interchange
  • Replacing the Yamato Road bridges
  • Replacing the bridge over Clint Moore Road
  • Replacing the bridge over L-38 Canal
  • Noise walls in qualifying areas
  • Increasing number of lanes from four to six and drainage improvements on Yamato Road

Project Background

In 2010, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise completed a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study evaluating the widening of Florida’s Turnpike from the Sawgrass Expressway to Atlantic Avenue (FPID 415927-1-22-01).

Project Area

Environment

As part of the PD&E Study finalized in 2010, potential impacts to the environment were evaluated to avoid, minimize and mitigate any impacts and were documented for this study. Based on the recommended design, there are potential impacts to other surface waters and/or wetlands. As the design phase continues, these impacts and any new impacts associated with the project, including any listed species or other wildlife, will be identified and addressed through the permitting process with the appropriate resource agencies. A re-evaluation will be prepared to document design phase environmental findings.

Noise Studies are performed in both Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study phase and the Design phase. A noise study was completed during the PD&E Study and the final Noise Study Report is in the Documents section below.
