Widen Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) PD&E Exhibit Room

The PD&E Study limits extend along the Sawgrass Expressway and SW 10th Street from west of US 441 to Powerline Road, around four miles. The study also includes around three miles of Florida’s Turnpike from Wiles Road to the Broward/Palm Beach County Line. The project is located within Broward County. There are three existing interchanges within the project limits, US 441 (SR 7), Lyons Road, and Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91).

A project’s purpose and need provide the basis for developing, considering, evaluating and eliminating project alternatives.

This graphic shows forecasted 2045 No-Build traffic conditions. The No-Build Alternative assumes that no improvements except routine maintenance would be made to the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike within the study limits.

Improvements to the study area are needed to enhance safety. Between the years 2017 and 2021, there were almost 1,900 crashes within the study limits, resulting in 555 injuries and 13 fatalities. These crashes equate to an economic cost of 276 million dollars. If nothing is done, increased congestion will lead to an increase in crashes.

The conceptual plans show the preferred alternative design and roadway cross sections along the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike.

This graphic shows forecasted 2045 build traffic conditions. Travel conditions are expected to be light and uncongested with no traffic backups within the study area, on the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike.

An evaluation matrix was prepared to compare the No-Build and Build Alternatives. The evaluation involved a combination of both comparative qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine the preferred alternative.

The Build and No-Build alternatives were compared. The Build alternative, or preferred alternative, eliminates mainline backups and reduces travel time by 36% within the study area. The proposed interchange and intersection improvements decrease signal delay within the study area by 67%. The preferred alternative also reduces congestion on local and adjacent roadways such as US 441, Lyons Road, Sample Road, and Glades Road.

Florida Department of Transportation has other projects underway along the Sawgrass Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike. The PD&E Study team is coordinating with these adjacent projects.

FDOT District Four is moving forward with the SW 10th Street Connector project. The limits of the FDOT District Four project overlap with the limits of this PD&E Study between Florida’s Turnpike and Powerline Road. The SW 10th Street Connector project will end west of Florida’s Turnpike. The preferred alternative of this PD&E Study was conceptually designed to have a seamless connection with the SW 10th Street project.

There is extensive ongoing coordination between the Enterprise and FDOT District Four projects.

The next step of the PD&E Study is to incorporate your input from this public hearing. After the comment period closes and your input has been considered, a decision will be made, and the final PD&E Study documents will be approved. The PD&E Study is expected to be completed by summer 2024. Please note that this schedule is subject to change.
