The Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) is a 21-mile limited access roadway located in northern Broward County that:
• provides a vital link to southwest Florida, and to southern Broward and Miami-Dade Counties;
• is designated as an evacuation route; and
• provides connectivity to other evacuation routes such as I-75, the Florida’s Turnpike Mainline (SR 91), and I-95.
This project involves widening the Sawgrass Expressway from north of Sample Road (Mile Post 12) to west of SR 7/US 441 (Mile Post 18.4) from the existing six lanes to ten lanes. Interchanges at Coral Ridge Drive and University Drive will be reconstructed or rehabilitated for operational capacity and safety enhancements.
Specific improvements include converting the Coral Ridge Drive interchange to a full diverging diamond interchange with two through lanes in each direction, and widening University Drive to accommodate an additional through lane (three lanes in total) at the existing diamond interchange. The Sawgrass Expressway Mainline bridges at Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs Drive, University Drive, and Riverside Drive will be widened to accommodate two additional lanes in each direction.
